 ANCIENT TIMES 

FIRST CIVILISATIONS


The early civilisations appeared in the river valley in fertile areas.


* MESOPOTAMIA: 'Land between rivers' Tigris and Euphrates.

                        It was the cradle of civilisations because people first gathered in large cities, learned/learnt                         to write, made laws and created governments.

                        They used pictograms for writing.



* INDIA

* CHINA

* EGYPT: next to river Nile.

                    Pharaohs were the Kings. People believed they were gods.

                    Pyramids were enormous tombs where mummified pharaohs were buried with their                                     belongings and treasures.

                    They used hieroglyphs for writing.

 ANCIENT GREECE


The cities were called POLEIS/POLIS.

    * Places in the polis.

                                    - Agora.

                                    - Acropolis.

                                    - Theatre.

                                    - Harbour.


RELIGION: They were POLYTHEISTS. They believed in many gods.

CULTURE:

                * They were great poets.

                * They built temples and theatres. They made many sculptures about human's body.

IMPORTANT PEOPLE:

        Philosophers: Plato and Aristotle.

        Mathematicians: Pythagoras and Archimedes.

ROMAN EMPIRE 

The first emperor was Octavio August.

ECONOMY:

    - Agriculture.

    - Craftsmanship.

    - Commerce.



SOCIAL STATUS:

    - Patricians: nobles, politicians and soldiers.

    - Plebeians: businessmen.

    - Slaves with no rights.


LANGUAGE: Latin.


RELIGION:

    First, they were polytheists. Then, Theodosius established CHRISTIANITY as the official religion.


What could you find in a town?

- Aqueducts.

- Forum. It was the centre of the town.

- Temples.

- Circus.

- Amphitheatres.

- Theatres.

- Public baths.

- Triumphal arches.


THE POPULATION HAD TO OBEY ROMAN LAW.
